Docskool is a pro – participation film and media institute. Docskool works to promote development of independent cinema from a South Asia focal perspective. We are a membership based body of filmmakers and media artists and are open to memberships from South Asia.
Docskool sees development of cinema as a continuous cultural process where practice support, policy advocacy, cultural exposure and individual representation are out lead interests.
We do not see cinema with unique cultural scopes exist without the recognition and interest to engage in the preservation and contemporary engagement of traditional art forms.
Docskool works out of the Kathmandu Film Center in Kathmandu, Nepal. We have a focus on working with South Asian cinema that is achieved through coalitions built with several national level film organizations and programs in 9 countries of SAARC and ASEAN.
Our community participation project is currently under way in the inner terai district of Udayapur in Eastern Nepal.
Our focus countries in South Asia are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India (North East states only), Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Docskool doesnot actively involve in the act of making films, funding films or developing talents for institutional enagement interest. We are apolitical and have no political identity except the one of promoting freedom of expression on cinema without any constraints.
The Clinik Regional Workshop has been designed as a capacity interlink process for filmmakers practicing in South Asia. South Asia’s growing film community makes it one of the world’s most lucrative media industry, however there is little sharing between prevalent practices and challenges within the region.
The workshop’s intention is to bring together independent film practitioners and cinema groups from countries with similar industrial setups as a process to fuel collaboration. Every year the Regional Workshop selects a number of countries from the region, inviting them for a week long program held in Nepal.
Docskool hosts the Clinik Regional Workshop at one of its community art spaces in either Kavre (25 kms from Kathmandu) or Udayapur of Eastern Nepal. These are participatory approached arts centers designed to promote dialogues on contemporary forms of traditional art practices.
The Regional Workshop is therefore held at a rich cultural environment that promotes understanding of localized opportunities on contemporary forms of arts including cinema.
The workshop is held between 7 – 10 days depending on the type of projects selected for any given year. A specific focus is on content analysis and development and in the understanding of production related practices from similar industries. Film and culture experts from South Asia and select countries join the workshop the given year.
The workshop has not been designed as a training program on cinema. We do not provide technical skills. Fresh film school graduates, intermediate practitioners or TV content developers may not fit into the requirements of the workshop, however we recommend any applications.
Every year we select a certain number of participants from the workshop to spend time at Docskool’s community art centers to work on a project they like or with us as community culture workers. This time can be used to practise ones craft and to understand contemporary rural cultures better.
Applications are currently ongoing. The workshop will be held in March 2016. (Detailed dates will be announced in January) There is no application form for this workshop.
The Clinik.Kathmandu ‘Production Lab’ is a feature specific script and project development workshop held for South Asian filmmakers.
The Clinik ‘Production lab’, earlier known as Clinik.Kathmandu has been the core workshop linking Docskool and South Asia since 2013.
The workshop is held in June in Kathmandu and takes a maximum of 10 applicants. The 2016 workshop will be held between 20th June – 2nd July 2016.
For application keen individuals, it is important to remember that the Production lab has been designed for filmmakers with a strong professional expertise and who are looking to seek international co-production as an advantage to tell their stories.
Joined in by our industry partners and several regional and international mentors, the Clinik ‘Production Lab’ is the only lab of its kind designed to link South Asian filmmakers to the world.
Projects are selected on the basis of the artist’s maturity and the development stage of the proposed project. We do not entertain non-fiction projects.
Applicants from and working in the following countries may apply: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India (North East), Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Clinik ‘Production Lab’ also takes in projects from South Asia Diaspora, for details please send an email.
The workshop starting 2016 is no longer free. Participants are expected to cover their personal travel and accommodation and must provide a training fee towards advisory sessions with personalized advisers.
